May Wine Tasting

May Wine Tasting
Friday, May 15th, 3:30-7:30pm.
Freeport Cheese & Wine

It's FREE! From 3:30-7:30pm!

Duelling Distributors!

Featuring wines from Argentina, Chile, France and Spain! Geoff Sturgess from Nappi Distributors will be here and he just returned from a trip to Argentina and Chile - so, we'll taste wines from places he visited! Tim Wissemann from Mariner Beverages will also be here with wines that are brand new to Maine!

The Wines

Geoff's Wines (Nappi)

Whites
  1. Cono Sur Vision Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (Chile) Reg. $13.99 Sale $12.99 - This is somewhat of a cross between New Zealand and California. It has some of those gooseberry/citrus notes that New Zealand has, but not as much grassiness. This is crisp and vibrant. Nice acidity. Drinks well with lighter dishes and without food.
  2. Dona Paula Estate Chardonnay 2005 (Argentina) $13.99 - nice value Chardonnay from Argentina! Aromas and flavors of pears, apples, figs and toast. Wine Spectator, 89 points.
  3. Errazuriz Wild Fermentation Chardonnay 2007 (Chile) $22.99 - What does Wild Fermentation mean? It means that no yeast is added to the grapes....that only the yeast naturally on the grapes starts the fermentation - this results in a slower fermentation. That means the flavors are more complex, subtle and layered.
  4. Cono Sur Vision Gewurztraminer 2006 (Chile) Reg. $13.99 Sale $12.99 - aromas and flavors of lychee nuts and pink grapefruit. A pleasing, subtle bitter note on the finish.

Roses

  1. Alta Vista Malbec Rose 2007 (Argentina) $10.99 - as a rule, Malbec roses are darker than most French ones - they spend more time in skin contact. This adds weight and tannins to the wine, so you don't have to drink them at as young of an age - they hold up better.
Reds
  1. Cono Sur Sustainable Agriculture Pinot Noir 2007 (Chile) $12.99 - nice bright color! Very aromatic. This is juicy and fresh tasting. Notes of cherries, raspberries, strawberries, plums and a little smokiness. Drink with mushrooms and dishes with Provencal herbs, fish, etc.
  2. Dona Paula Malbec 2007 (Argentina) $14.99 - Rich, dark wine! Notes of currants, chocolate, coffee, dark berries and herbs. Wine Spectator, 90 points
  3. Montgras Reserva Carmenere 2008 (Chile) $13.99 - This has some of the green bell pepper aroma that typifies Carmenere, but it is not in the flavors! Merlot mouthfeel - smooth and rich! Flavors are more Syrah-like - peppery, spicy, dark fruit! NY Times #1 rated Carmenere!
  4. Montgras Quattro 2007 (Chile) $18.99 - We love this! Blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, 25% Syrah and 15% Carmenere. Big and rich and lush!T

Tim's Wines (Mariner) - these are all brand new to Maine!

Whites

  1. Domaine Sallies Viognier 2008 (Languedoc, France) $11.99 - clean, beautiful wine. Nice and fragrant (which Viognier should be!). Unoaked.
  2. Domaine Sallies Chardonnay 2008 (Languedoc, France) $11.99 - not oaky. Sees some malolactic fermentation so it picks up a bit of creaminess. Lighter, cleaner style of Chardonnay!
  3. Schoenheitz Pinot Blanc 2006 (Alsace, France) $18.99 - I love this! Dry, minerally with nice fruit. This just screams for some shellfish, smoked fish or ham.
  4. Juan Luis Cana Rioja Blanca 2007 (Spain) $16.99 - Rich white from Rioja! Notes of stone fruits (peaches), vanilla and toasty oak! Also, hints of nuts, lemons and a crisp finish! Great with seafood paella!
Roses
  1. Domaine Begude Pinot Noir Rose 2008 (Languedoc, France) $15.99 - Another wine we love from one of our favorite new importers, Didier Boutet! Didier has some gems from France.....at great prices!
Reds
  1. Domaine Sallies Malbec 2007 (Languedoc, France) $11.99 - Really nice medium-bodied wine! This is a style of Malbec that is "dialed back" some from most Argentine Malbecs. Nice dark fruit, but its not "jammy" like some Argentine Malbecs nor is it oaky. You should try this and compare it to Geoff's Malbec and the Quattro!
  2. Porta dos Cavaleiros Reserva 1997 (Portuguese) $19.99 - When the new owners of moved into Porta dos Cavaleiros, they found this Reserva in a dark and dusty corner. It's just reaching its maturity! This is from the Dao region, Southeast of Porto. The label is made from cork. The color shows a little brick at the edge, which is appropriate for a wine its age. The fruit is more like stewed or dried berries than fresh. It has a little meatiness to it. Great with game, venison, casseroles.
  3. Vinedos y Bodegas Pablo Menguante Garnacha 2007 (Spain) $10.99 - This is more about being a subtle wine with dark fruit and minerals than it is being a "fruitbomb." They farm biodynamically. The vines are 80-100 years-old.
  4. Red Car Boxcar Syrah 2007 (California) $21.99 - This is a big, rich California Syrah without being to overblown! Loads of flavor! Earth, white pepper, dark fruit and cherries. About 25% of this sees oak.

The Wines
All of these wines are from one importer, Grapes of Spain. They only deal in Spanish wines - and they excel at finding great tasting ones at great values! Wine reviewers such as Robert Parker, Wine Spectator, Jancis Robinson, Food & Wine and others rave about Aurelio Cabestrero's ability to find good wines at great prices.

Sparkling:

Conde de Subirats Brut Rose Cava (Penedes, Spain) $12.99 - Light pink with fine bubbles! Aromas of strawberries, red berries and a hint of fresh bread, baking spices and pepper. Flavors of lighter red fruit and a touch of fresh bread yeastiness. 90% Trepat and 10% Pinot Noir. From the heart of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, the birthplace of Cava. Stainless steel fermentation. Aged 18 months in the bottle on lees before disgorging. Then the dosage is added to make the wine "bubbly." This is the same time-consuming, expensive method as Champagne and it results in finer, better, longer-lasting bubbles.

Flare Moscatel (Valencia, Spain) $12.99 - Moderately sweet bubbly that is great for a brunch or picnic or party! Aromas of apples, pears, flowers, anise and herbs. Flavors of apples and pears. Starts out sweet and then finishes with impression of dryness. 100% Moscatel (Muscat of Alexandria). Unfortified. Fermentation is stopped at 7.5% alcohol by chilling the tank and then filtering the yeast. Carbonation is created through the Charmat (Metodo Italiano) method - the wine undergoes a secondary fermentation in the tank - this creates the bubbles - and then it is bottled.

Whites

Nessa Albarino 2008 (Rias Baixas, Spain) $14.99 - This is delicious! Spain’s best wine wine grape! Albariño! Wonderful aromas of peaches, pears, citrus, flowers & minerals. Flavors of white peaches, minerals & a wonderful, zippy acidity that has a little saline quality to it! It's medium-bodied & dry. Estate grown grapes. Stainless steel fermentation. Aged 1 month on lees to soften the texture. Food pairing - Great paired with fresh Maine seafood, especially shellfish! Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 88 points

Las Colinas del Ebro Garnacha Blanc 2007 (Terra Alta, Spain) $11.99 - Nice lighter citrus and orchard fruit flavors that are rich and intense, but not heavy. Aromas of pears, lemons, minerals and baking spices. 100% Garnacha Blanca from 100 year-old vines. Stainless steel - sees no oak. Hand-harvested. Aged on lees for 2 months to add complexity. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, 88 points

Bodegas Pedro Escudor Fuente Elvira Verdejo 2007 (Rueda, Spain) $14.99 - Delicious! This is a perfectly bright, fresh and crisp wine. Great value! Aromas of grapefruit and herbs such as chives and freshly mown grass. Flavors of tangerines & tropical fruits. Well-balanced & integrated acidity. Finishes crisp, clean & dry. Rueda is best known for producing dry wines from the Verdejo grape. This is a great example! Single vineyard with vines that average 40 years. Think of this as a Spanish Sauvignon Blanc! Food pairing – oysters, sharp goat cheeses, green olives, lighter poultry dishes, smoked fish, etc. Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, 89 points

Red

Bodegas Tintoralba Almansa Higuerela Grenache 2008 (Almansa, Spain) $9.99
- We love this! Perfect summer red! We call this wine "Higgy" for short! This is one outstanding wine! It has nice, big, soft fruit (red & dark berries, plums)....a touch of pepper, but not too much. It's done completely in stainless steel - so the fruit is bright & fresh. Sees no oak. From Almansa. Food pairing - Try it on its own or with chicken, grilled veggies, salmon, etc.

El Talud Rioja 2006 (Rioja, Spain) $14.99 - Straightforward tasty wine showcasing fresh raspberry/boysenberry fruit. The tannins are round and soft. Nice length on the finish. Easy-drinking wine! 100% Tempranillo. Made from grapes from several micro-vineyards (about 2.5 acres each) from vines that are 40-78 years-old in the village of Cenicero in Rioja Alavesa. Fermented at cold temperatures in stainless steel - no oak.

Prima Toro 2006 (Toro, Spain) $22.99 - Lovely wine with a lingering finish that is loaded with soft, fresh fruit. Dark color. Aromas and flavors of cooked cherries, blackberries, minerals and fresh flowers. Some notes of baking spices and leather in the aromas. Smooth texture. Fine-grained tannins. Mouth-coating. 90% Tinta de Toro, 10% Grenache. Hand-harvested. Stainless steel fermentation. Aged 12 months in 2nd & 3rd use French and American oak barrels. Unfiltered. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, 90 points; Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 89 points

Neo Vivir, Vivir 2007 (Ribera del Duero, Spain) $11.99 - 100% Tempranillo from 20-60 year-old vines in La Horra. Produced by J.C. Conde who makes Neo Sentido, a "WOW" high-end wine! Aged in tank (not oak) for 10 months before bottling. Deep, dark color. Aromas & flavors of minerals, baking spices, dark cherries & dark berries. Smooth texture. Drink over the next 3 years. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90 points, "Spain's Top 100 Wine Values"

Luigi Bosca Luján de Cuyo Vineyard Reserva Malbec 2006 (Argentina) $19.99 - This is a big, rich Malbec from a century-old, family-owned winery! It was a HUGE hit at a wine tasting! Deep violet color. Aromas of cherries, ripe plums, vanilla & spice. Hints of flowers. Flavors of figs, dark berries, vanilla, pepper & spices. A rich wine! Aged 14 months in oak. High elevation desert vineyard. Single vineyard. Will age for up to 8 years. Food pairing - drinks well with rich grilled meats, aged cheeses such as Parmesan Reggiano or Piave Vecchio. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 91 points

Pulmary Donaria Bonarda 2004 (Argentina) $22.99 - We love this wine! The winemaker was at our October tasting and this was a HUGE hit! She makes fantastic wines! Full-bodied. Loaded with flavors and aromas. Aromas of red fruit & herbs. Flavors of red and dark berries, black cherries, herbs and spice. Nice balance of tannins, acidity and fruit. Bonardo is a grape originally from Piedmont in Italy where it is a “blending grape.” 627 cases made. Organic farming. Female winemaker. Food pairing – harder cheeses, beef, lamb, pork. Drinks well on its own, but a better food wine.

Tomero Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Argentina) $13.99 - Doug and Cat feel that some of the best wines to come out of Argentina today and in the future are Cabernet! Great value in a Cabernet! Aromas and flavors of jammy dark berry fruit, red berries, baking spices, black cherries and more.....easy to drink. Medium-to-full bodied with softer tannins that kind of have an Italian dustiness to them if you know what I mean (I don't mean dirty earth). Juicy and ripe fruit on the finish. 20% is aged in French oak barrels for 8 months. Bottle aged for 6-12 months at winery. Hand-harvested grapes. Also from the Finca Los Alamos vineyard in the Upper Uco Valley of Mendoza. This is a high desert that is at 3,500 feet above sea level with less than 4 inches of rain per year. During the growing season the temperature differential between night and day is 60 degrees. Food pairing - grill up a steak. Roast a chicken. Sauté a bunch of mushrooms.

Vistalba Corte C 2005 (Argentina) $13.99 - Violet red color. Rich aromas and flavors of red fruits and dried fruits. Notes of eucalyptus. In the mouth, this wine is soft and round with balanced tannins and a nice long finish. Carlos Pulenta's family estate is located in the center of Vistalba within the Lujan de Cuyo region of Argentina. The vineyard sits at the foot of the magnificent Cordon del Plata within the Andes Mountains. The characteristics of the poor soil in this area makes it the perfect home for many grapes, especially Malbec. 80% Malbec and 20% Merlot. From the Finca Vistalba vineyard in the Lujan de Cuyo. The large temperature swings from day to night during the growing season help develop color and tannins. Hand-harvested. 20% is aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months. Food pairing - steak, lamb - this is from Argentina after all!

Weinert Mendoza Malbec 2003 (Argentina) $26.99 - Excellent wine & distinctly different than most Argentine Malbecs – more Bordeaux-like than California Cabernet. More like really good Bordeaux a big, dark, extracted New World wine. Great length on the flavors. The aromas EVOLVE in the glass - dried berries, leather & minerals. Flavors of dark fruit, pepper, licorice, smoke. Well-integrated & smooth tannins. 100% Malbec. 70+ year-old vines. 3 years in French oak casks. Natural yeasts + winemaking.....natural wines. Food pairing - steak. You'll see this a lot when an Argentine red is in the mix! More of a food wine than a cocktail wine.

Chile

France

Reds

Château Gachon Cuvée Saint-Georges Montagne St. Emilion 2005 (Bordeaux, France) $28.99
- Beautiful wine from the great 2005 vintage! Deep color – garnet/ruby. Lots of ripe red fruit aromas. Plums, cherries, red currants, cassis & baking spices. The fruit & tannins are well-balanced. Well-structured wine. Solid backbone (that means the tannins are there, but they aren’t dominating the wine & the fruit). Silky midway with ripe red berries. Long, pleasing finish asking you to refill your glass! Many locals head to Montagne for the “deepest, richest” reds of Saint-Emilion. Also, the wines here are better values than most of Saint-Emilion! Gérard Arpin, who also owns Château Franc-Maillet in Pomerol, runs this estate. On a hillside amidst Saint-Emilion’s greatest vineyards with the same deep chalk soil. 6,000 cases made. The vines are 35+ years old. They limit yields to 1/3 lower than permitted – producing better quality grapes. Aged for 12 months in 25% new oak barrels. Blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc & 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Food pairing – duck, roast lamb, game birds, pork. More of a “food” wine than a “cocktail” wine.

Château Lamartine Cuvée Particulière Cahors 2004 (Cahors, France) $24.99 - The “black wine of Cahors” because it is DARK! & this tastes great! Reminds me of a good Haut-Medoc Bordeaux! Aromas & flavors of black cherries, blackberries, blueberries, plums, currants, coffee, spice & dried fruits. Concentrated, rich & big without being jammy. A lot going on! Good acidity & structure. Long finish. Blend of 90% Malbec & 10% Merlot. Aged in new French oak for 14 months. Food pairing - grilled or roasted meats, lamb or beef stew, rich mushroom dishes, etc. This will benefit from opening early and decanting.

Château Moine Blanc Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2005 (Bordeaux, France) $38.99 - A superb wine and a great value from one of Bordeaux’s best vintages ever! Smooth, complex and full of rich, ripe blackberries, black currants, anise and baking spices with just a touch of vanilla. Rich, lush wine that drinks well now and will age well for a number of years! Moine Blanc was the first Saint-Emilion estate to adopt biodynamic agriculture in 1982. This property dates to the 14th century. The brilliant “garagiste” winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin made this wine! 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet France. Aged in 30% new oak barrels. Organic AND Biodynamic Farming.

Château Tour de Mirambeau Cuvée Passion Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2004 (France) $28.99 - This is a superb wine – and just shows what an outstanding winemaker can do – even from a so-called “humble” area (Entre-deux-Mers)! We love it! As a point of information, the legendary Chateau Petrus is made on land that used to be considered “humble.” Aromas of cassis, smoke, licorice, cedar and oak. Medium-to-full-bodied. Rich. Velvety. Lush, long finish. This is a beautifully flavored Bordeaux! Herbal, dark berry and smoky flavors. 70% Merlot & 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Food pairing - Goes well with grilled meat, stews and roasts. This will drink well for 4-7 years.

Domaine André Brunel Vin de Pays de Vaucluse Grenache 2005 (Rhone, France) $9.99 – A definite “star” for a daily “go to red!” This is an awesome wine from a winemaker whose Châteauneuf-de-Pape commands big dollars. André Brunel is one of the world’s truly great winemakers. His wines are legendary, award-winning, powerful wines. Aromas of herbs (rosemary, sage, Provence), peppery spice, black cherries, plums, blackberries. Deep, dark clear color. Juicy, big, spicy mid-palate. Soft, chewy tannins at finish. Unfiltered. Hand-picked & destemmed. 90% Grenache & 10% Carignan. Stainless steel fermentation and aging. Food pairing - Great wine with grilled or roasted meats, hearty stews, etc. Decant to open up more rapidly.

Domaine Gourt de Mautens Cotes du Rhône Villages Rasteau 2005 (France) $99.99 – This is a bottle you will want to age and cellar. This is not for drinking now! You will do yourself and the wine a disservice! It needs at least 6-7 years right now and could go 15-20 years and still be peaking! This is considered an “insider’s wine” – generally, you have to know someone to get this. Not much is made – 1,700 cases. Little is imported to the United States – 100 cases. 20 cases are in Maine. Less than that are available today! Winemaker Jérôme Bressy farms just over 20 acres of vines. He is fanatical about grape quality. He farms organically. While his old-vine vineyard naturally has low yields, he pushes them lower by “green harvesting” to increase the quality even more. This is one of the best estates in Rasteau. The REVUE DU VIN DE FRANC, France’s famous wine magazine, enthusiastically called Bressy “the new star of the Rhône!” In the “Bible” of French wine writing, Le Grand Guide des Vins de France, famed French wine reviewers Bettane & Desseauve call Gourt de Mautens, “one of the best of the French wineries,” and they put it at the same level as the famous Chateauneuf-du-Pape wineries Chateau Rayas and Domaine Henri Bonneau – yes, they are equating a Rasteau with legendary Châteaneuf-du-Pape wineries! Jerome Bressy – in his own words:

"I’m willing to make the best possible wine and to equal the great wine makers. To do so, I’m always trying new things and I am always questioning myself. I’m not one to make the same wine year after year, there must be an evolution and sometime even a revolution! That’s why one could be surprised tasting the difference between two vintage years of Gourt de Mautens. Nothing’s for granted on the path to perfection, I keep on learning and expressing new things. Each year I try to make the best of what the vine has to offer. But it all depends on nature, on the earth, the weather, and I try to feel that and do the best out from that osmosis.”

The wine:

Beautiful blackberry and black cherry fruits, licorice and spice. Notes of earth, chocolate, pepper…..a little of that Old World dusty rusticity. Right now, this wine is tannic and MASSIVE! You are going to have to think about this one and WONDER what it will taste like in 6-15 years! Unfiltered. Unfined. Natural yeast. Aged 12 months in demi-muids (300 liter barrels) and foudres (larger barrels); then 18 months in concrete vats (these are lined so you aren’t tasting cement). The 2005 harvest was bottled in June 2008 (30 months of aging). 1,700 cases made. This wine is made for LONG-TERM cellaring and aging. It develops very slowly and 2005 was an EXCEPTIONAL vintage. Blend of 70% old-vine Grenache with the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92+ points (tasted from the barrel)

Whites

Full-bodied. Smooth & mouth-filling. Not a sweet wine nor is it extremely dry. A rare white wine that really evolves after being opened for a day or so. Aromas of honeysuckle, green apple & crème brulée. Richly flavored with a stony mineral quality. Well-balanced acidity. 100% Chenin Blanc. From a tiny Loire Valley area. Domaine Saumaize Michelin St. Veran “Les Creches” 2006 (France) $32.99 – if you ever wanted to know what “stirring of the lees” means, look at this picture! (4th picture down). You’ll also see some gorgeous photos of Burgundy and an awesome cliff! This small estate has about 45 acres of Chardonnay and 1 acre of Gamay (for Mâcon Rouge). All of the wines are 100% barrel fermented (10-25% new barrels per vintage) and go through 100% malolactic fermentation. They make about 3,800 cases of wine per vintage. The family estate is owned by Roger and Christine Saumaize-Michelin. They built new cellars in 1991. Anthony Dias Blue, in his “Pocket Guide to Wine 2006,” says of Roger Saumaize, “(he’s a)….meticulous vineyard manager and skilled winemaker, makes Mâcon whites…..dense and rich for the region, they behave more like great Côte de Beaunes.” Elegant and fruity nose with great minerality. Round, rich, fresh and well balanced. You notice this wine is aged on its lees. Aromas of apples, pears, baking spices and citrus peel. The apple notes pick up in the flavors. From vines in Davaye and planted in limestone-based soils. Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, 89 points

Serge LaLoue Sancerre 2007 (Loire, France) $24.99 - Wonderful Sancerre! Citrus aromas with that great smell of freshly mown grass. Rich wine. Organic farming. Family-owned and run winery in the Loire Valley. Food pairing - GREAT with seafood and fresh goat cheese!

Von Schleinitz Pinot Noir 2006 (Germany) $19.99
- Yes! A German Pinot Noir! This is light, earthy with nice minerality and acidity. This is an AUSTERE wine and I mean that as a compliment! If you are looking for a big fruit bomb of a Pinot Noir, this is not for you! If you are looking for a more nuanced, layered wine with lots of subtleties......try this! Definitely a food wine. I was at a luncheon with Connie Von Schleinitz this winter at Portland’s Bresca (great restaurant, BTW), and we had this with duck breast, risotto and mushrooms! WOW! Food pairing – pork tenderloin, duck, dark meat chicken, grilled salmon….

This vineyard produces full-bodied wines! The vineyard is 165 acres, but it is divided into a large number of individual parcels. This vineyard led to the citizens of Wehlen being well-off. In the early 20th century they built a suspension bridge across the river - that bridge and the sundial are historical landmarks. Plump, yet well-defined by its lively structure. Peach, lime and mineral notes are accented by strawberry and vanilla in this complex white. Fine length. Drink now through 2022. 700 cases made. Wine Spectator, 90 points

Lebanon

Chateau Musar 1997 (Lebanon) $54.99
- My father’s favorite wine (and the wine the Wall Street Journal calls the “greatest wine value in the world”)! You must try Musar! The legendary red wine of Lebanon. Many people consider this the best wine in the world – and it is truly outstanding and UNIQUE (this wine, given Lebanon’s civil war is a great story – just ask Eric). The passion and love that go into making this wine are just beyond description! It's a rich, warm deep cherry red with a smoky nose full of spice & fruits. On the palate there are mixed berry fruits - cherries, red currants, pomegranates & spices like cinnamon & nutmeg. The fruit is ripe & sweet with a smoky edge. Good acidity with good tannin levels results in a wine of classic structure with long aging potential. Simply put, what it is ELEGANT. Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon/Cinsault. The 1997 vintage is highly thought of as the best ever - a fresh spring with no hail or frost & a mild summer & sunny September created perfect conditions, resulting in a wine Serge Hochar describes as 'very very beautiful'. Meant for aging and a GREAT gift for a wine lover! If you are a Musar lover and want other vintages, please ask…we can get most vintages going back decades.

Almira Los Dos Grenache/Syrah "Campo de Borja" 2007 (Spain) $8.99 - This is a 3-star...may be a 4-star, WOOOOEEEE!!!! wine...we were guessing $12-14 when we tasted it. This is fun, complex & tasty. Soft in the mouth. Soft tannins. Wonderful red & dark berry fruit. It gets even better tomorrow, so don’t hesitate to open it when you want a glass or two. It's 93% Garnacha & 7% Syrah from old-vine grapes. The Syrah adds ripe strawberries to the nose & flavors. The wine has what the Spanish call, "Soto bosque" = forest floor herbs. Unoaked. This is a great wine for a party, whether you are having food with it or not. Food pairing - Great with grilled poultry, roasted pork or poultry.

Nieto Senetiner Malbec 2006 (Argentina) $12.99 - The winemaking consultant for this wine is Italy's legendary winemaker, Alberton Antonini. This is a big rich Malbec - lots of plums, figs and dried fruit. Full-bodied. Definite notes of vanilla. Aged one year in French oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle. Food pairing - lamb, steak, beef or lamb stews.

Rioja Vega - this winery dates to 1882. It's old enough that it pre-dates the formation of the D.O., Rioja. So, it is able to use Rioja in the name of the winery. We are trying two Riojas - a Joven (or younger Rioja) and a Crianza (refers to being aged in oak for a certain regulated minimum time and then in the bottle). This is a great opportunity to compare and contrast 2 styles of a similar wine!

Rioja Vega Joven 2007 (Spain) $9.99 - Fresh, young ripe fruit! Jovens are meant to drink young & easy - and this does! Nice structure and balance! Aromas and flavors of cherries, strawberries and a little earthy mushroomishness on the finish! Blend of mostly Tempranillo (90%) with a little Garnacha. Fermented in stainless steel tanks. Minimally aged before the winery releases this wine - this is meant to drink young! Food pairing - grilled chicken, pasta dishes, great for a party!

Rioja Vega Crianza 2005 (Spain) $14.99 – Wonderful, classic Rioja! Aromas of baking spices, currants, red berries & black raspberries. Medium-bodied and soft - this is how I think Rioja should be - more about elegance and less about power. Blend of 50% Tempranillo, 25% Mazuelo and 25% Garnacha. Aged 12 months in 4th use oak barrels and then 6 months in the bottle. This will drink well for 5-6 years. Food pairing - poultry, pork, mushrooms, etc.

Terranoble Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Chile) $13.99 - Wonderful rich texture and fullness to this wine! Red berries, smoke, chocolate and ripe fruit dominate the aromas and flavors. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 8 months in 50% new and 50% used oak barrels and for 9 months and then 8 months in the bottle. 5,500 cases made. Food pairing - red meat, duck, pork or venison.

Anima Negra AN2 2005 (Mallorca, Spain) $24.99 – This is a great story! Three young men from Mallorca revolutionized the winemaking on Mallorca focusing on the indigenous grapes found on the island. They contracted with 135 tiny vineyards to acquire the rights to vines that are 50-to-85 years old! Then, they started making outstanding wines! This is their "entry-level" wine.

Beautiful, big rich Spanish red! Aromas of toast, baking spices, raspberries and black cherries! Silky, elegant texture. Long, long finish. Blend of 65% Callet, 20% Mantonegre-Fogoneu and 15% Syrah. Aged 12 months in 70% new French and American oak. This will drink well for 4-6 years. Food pairing - beef, steak, lamb, etc. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 91 Points

Cambas Chardonnay 2006 (Peloponnesus, Greece) Reg. $9.99 Sale $8.99 – Definitely NOT an oaky Chardonnay. This is clean, crisp with nice lemon and honey aromas and flavors. It also has hints of nuts. Medium-bodied. Nice acidity. Food pairing – richer fish such as tuna, salmon, halibut, etc. Lobster. Rich cheeses.

In many ways, Greece popularized wine in the Mediterranean - its production dates to the island of Crete as far back as the Minoans (2,600-1,100 BC). Greek colonies spread vines throughout Europe, the Black Sea and even into Northern Europe. This laid the foundation for modern viticulture throughout Europe. Greek wines were a valuable trading product through the Byzantine Empire, but when the Ottoman Turks occupied Greece, production fell and never recovered. When the Turks left Greece and the modern Greek state was founded in 1913, most farms and vineyards were destroyed.

Until recently, Greece was known for making Retsina (that pine resiny drink) and bulk wines that were popular because they were cheap. There were a few exceptions - this winery is one of them. Founded it 1882, Cambas Winery is unusual in that it grows both traditional Greek grapes as well as grapes such as Chardonnay. Greece's entry into the European Union in 1981 helped open markets to Greek wines and bring in needed investment dollars - at the same time, the EU was floating on a veritable sea of jug wine. So, the focus was on increasing quality. Greece is following the path that revolutionized winemaking in Italy and Spain in the 20th century - focus on quality first and foremost.

Cambas Winery was established in 1882. Today, it is one of the Greek wineries leading the Greek wine renaissance!

Celler La Bollidora Terra Alta D.O. "CLB" 2006 (Spain) Reg. $21.99 Sale $14.99 – Excellent! Dark, purple color. Aromas of blueberries, black cherries and spices. Big, rich, spicy....lots of big, dark ripe fruit. Tannins and acidity backing up the fruit. Long, long finish....Blend of 50% Garnacha Negra, 40% Syrah and 10% Samso (Carinena). Unoaked. This will drink real well over the next 2-3 years and drink well through 2015.

Terra Alta is a Designation of Origin (D.O.) wine-growing area in Spain - that's what the D.O. means on a bottle. This is an area we are just beginning to discover in the US. The area is in Catalonia, near Tarragona. This is the part of Spain closest to France along the Mediterranean Sea. It's about 17,000 acres in size. Winds, El Cierzo, up the Ebro River Valley help reduce the humidity in the area - protecting the vines from disease. The climate is a mixture of Mediterranean and Continental - long, hot, dry summers and cold, cold winters. Terra Alta has been a D.O. since 1972 and they've made wine there since the 13th century. In ancient times, the Romans built a road from Saragossa to Tortosa - they probably introduced grapes to the area (they did everywhere else!). In the Middle Ages, the Knights Templar planted vines, but the remoteness of the area made it impossible to make money from the wines, so they converted most vineyards to olive groves. Picasso features a great many local scenes in his paintings.

Food pairing – Pair this with lamb, steak, poultry, pork, salmon, mushroom dishes, etc. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 90 points

Tier Two

White:

Branko Collio D.O.C. Tocai Friulano 2005 (Friuli, Italy) Reg. $24.99 Sale $17.99 - Tocai Friulano is a grape that is local to northeastern Italy! Friuli, tucked next to Slovenia, north of Venice, produces Italy's greatest white wines.

The wine is minerally and spicy more than fruity. The fruits are green apples, pears and white peaches. The minerals, spices and apples dominate the flavors and aromas. This has a real lush texture at the front - it's real soft and round in its feel. The finish is dry with a nice crispness to it. This is aging nicely and will age for several more years.

What really defines and distinguishes Friuli from the rest of Italy is its emphasis on quirky, unusual local grape varieties. 100+ grape varieties are grown in this area. These growers are not planting the currently popular grapes - they keep plugging away at their traditional grapes! Also, this area focuses on quality to a degree that is rare in the world.

This is a Venetian wine - the grape may be native to Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. There is speculation that it is from Hungary, but it has zero resemblance to any Hungarian variety. Tocai Friulano was documented in Friuli in 1771. It's also called Sauvignonasse (which is not Sauvignon Blanc, despite the name). It's the most widely planted white wine in Friuli (and planted widely in the Veneto and eastern Lombardy. Where is Friuli? Here!

This is not to be confused with Tokay, Tokaji or Tokay d'Alsace . And, Tocai Friulano will soon be known merely as "Friulano" after a fight with Hungary (Hungary won the battle for the name in the European Union). This is a shame because Friulano is made from Tocai grapes and Tokay or Tokaji is made from Furmint and Harslevelu grapes and Tokay/Tokaji is the name of a wine style, not a grape. France's "Tokay d'Alsace" is made from Pinot Gris (which is what the Alsatians and Germans call Pinot Grigio).

This is a cool climate grape - it buds late and ripens late. It really likes the deep, gravelly soils found in Friuli, especially the Collio area. Food pairing - smoked fish, smoked shellfish, ham, lobster, scallops, duck, poultry, etc.

Red:

"In Situ" Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (Chile) Reg. $25.99 Sale $18.99 - Deep, rich red color. Aromas of ripe red berries, eucalyptus, spices, rosemary, dried fruit and vanilla. Flavors of plums, raspberries, cola and mint. The tannins are smooth, mature and well-integrated. The finish is nice and long.

Almost all (90% ) Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Cabernet Franc and Carmenere to round things out. Hand-harvested grapes. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then 100% of the wine goes into French and American oak barrels for 12 months aging - mixture of new and older oak barrels, so this is not "oaky." Bottle aged for 6 months. The vineyards are in the Aconcagua Valley (that's the Western Hemisphere's highest mountain).

Vina San Esteban is a family-owned winery. They farm sustainably. This is drinking nicely today and will aged well for 3-6 years. Food pairing - steak, beef, lamb, rich cheeses.

Tier Three

White:

Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier 2007 (Australia) $21.99 - Excellent Viognier! I love this grape and Yalumba does it as well as anyone in the world! In fact, they are pioneers of this grape in Australia and this vintage includes a couple of new clones they've developed.

The wine is a pale color (golden-green) with aromas of stone fruits (apricots and nectarines), honeysuckle, orange rind and white flowers. The tastes are long-lasting - long, rich and luscious. Stone fruits with bracing citrus acidity.
After harvest, 60% of the fruit in put into oak barrels and the rest into stainless steel tanks. They use indigenous yeasts, which are natural to the vineyard. The wine is left on its "lees" (residue at the bottom) for 10 months with regular "batonage" (stirring the lees into the wine) - this adds complexity and richness and adding a voluptuous texture to the wine.

Yalumba is Australia's oldest family-owned winery. Founded in 1849! Samuel Smith, a brewer, emigrated to Australia and put his knowledge of fermentation to work after planting vineyards. Today, six generations and 160 years later, his descendents continue his work! 1,600 cases imported. Drink now through 2011. Food pairing - salads, poultry, fish, seafood. Wine Spectator, 91 points, Top 100 2008 Wines, #55

Red:
